Fly Tying with William Gerrard
Orcadian Oddities
William will be demonstrating patterns used on the Orkney Islands. The Orkney Trout Fishing Association's competition rules call for small flies. In Ontario, since we aren't constrained by the same rules, novice tyers should try tying these using larger hooks.
Here's the list of materials:
The Hedgehog
Hook: Kamasan B170, Size 10 - 14 (substitute Mustad 3906, Size 10)
Thread: Hot orange
Wing & Body: Orange seal's fur in between three bunches of dark roe deer tied hedgehog style up the back (substitute coastal deer hair for roe deer)
Ken's Doobry Muddler
Hook: Kamasan B170, Size 10 (substitute Mustad 3906, Size 10)
Thread: Black 6/0 UNI.
Tail: No. 5 (Orange) Glo-Brite yarn
Rib: Gold wire
Body: Medium flat gold tinsel
Hackles: Palmered black and orange cock
Head: Orange deer hair tied muddler style
