Bass in Lakes

a presentation by

Dr. Mark Ridgway

On Thursday, March 4, 2004, Winter Hatches members met to hear what Dr. Ridgway had to say about approaching bass in lakes. It was indeed an interesting topic which definitely taught us many things we didn't about bass behaviour.

Dr Ridgway started with the introduction of the different species of bass in North America (seven in total). However, only two occur in Canada: Smallmouth and Largemouth Bass.

Dr. Ridgway's doctoral thesis involved studying themovements of these beautiful creatures. He has been involved in this for a numbers of years now and has lectured in Canada and the U.S.

The following was learned from him.

  1. The different habitats where the fish live according to species and time of year.
  2. The area and distance that fish usually travel per day.
  3. Spawning season habits and the compelling evidence to support fishing bans during the spawn.
  4. Behaviors of both male and female during spawning.
  5. Comparison chart of fish growth and year class size.
  6. The important factors for a fish to fully develop to the adult stage.
  7. Main food sources for both species and temperature factors.
  8. Where the fish can be found during winter.
  9. Equipment needed to fish for them was discussed.

Finally, the evening ended with an animated question and answer period.

We thank Dr. Ridgway and appreciate the time and knowledge put into this presentation. We have a new appreciation for these creatures of summer and the complex ecosystem involved in their survival.
