Fly Tying
Fly fishing on the Internet
|
On January 27, 2008, the Annual Fly Tying Symposium will again be in the North York Civic Centre. This year’s line-up of instructors includes: Ken Chandler
Ken Chandler is a full time independent fly fishing guide headquartered in Markdale, Ontario. Born and raised in South-western Ontario, Ken started angling as soon as he could walk. For the past twenty years his focus has been on fly-fishing. Ken has spent thousands of hours on local rivers, developing and perfecting his techniques for trout, salmon, bass, muskellunge, pike, and carp. From working in local fly shops, Ken has well-honed teaching skills. He has introduced hundreds of people to fly fishing, and his easy-going style makes learning a truly enjoyable experience. Ken now offers guide services and drift boat trips for Southern Ontario rivers including the Saugeen, Maitland, Nottawasaga, Bighead, Conestoga, Sauble, Bayfield, Credit, and Grand River systems. Check out Ken’s website: Ken Chandler Fly Fishing Adventures. Roy De Giusti
Having fished for a variety of species in numerous locales, Roy has settled on one fish - the brown trout and one river - the Credit River. He has perfected his skills for more than three decades on his beloved Credit River. When he's not dying material for specific fly patterns, he may be found fine-tuning a bamboo rod of his own creation. Roy's patterns have been included in various magazines and books. He is well known for his realistic patterns that could fool humans as well as trout. Roy is a pro-staff member for The First Cast Fly Shop. Steve Hunt
Ian James says this about Steve: “I’ve known and fished with Steve Hunt, a.k.a. Mr. Epoxy, for many years. Steve is one of those fly fishermen who catch more than their fair share of fish. He does it by thinking ‘outside the box.’ Whether it’s steelhead off the break-walls of Lake Ontario, those cute little brown trout on the upper Grand, or in a storm with the rain blowing sideways, he's never afraid to try new things. In fact, some of the patterns he's developed are, simply, spot-on. I’m seldom without his Bob Marley fly - it's a cracker.” Ian Colin James
Ian is not only a world-class fly tyer, he’s a best-selling author (“Fumbling with a Flyrod”) and raconteur. He’s anchored the Symposium for many a season and people keep coming back for more. There is a rumour that Ian, inspired by the surgical rubber tubing with which he became intimately familiar in recent months, has devised a new fly. Don’t miss the Carpfather as he unveils his tying creation and shows off his new leaner, but not meaner, image. Ian’s website is worth reading. Tom Karrow
Tom has been a fly angler for over 20 years. His Grandfather introduced him to flyfishing on the spring-fed tributaries of the Beatty Saugeen River. Tom managed one of Ontario’s flyfishing shops for 5 years, but now he’s a seasoned science and geography teacher in Waterloo Region, where he promotes environmental awareness in his classes. He is also a pro-staff member for The First Cast Fly Shop and provides custom-tied flies to the store. His true passion is saltwater flyfishing. For two decades he’s been making annual trips to Florida and now regularly takes people to fish on his Maverick Flats Boat. William Gerrard
A seasoned instructor, William has been teaching fly tying courses geared to all ages for many years. His Beginner’s Class is a great introduction to all types of flies: wet flies, dry flies, and streamers. The Assistant Instructors – all veteran tyers from Winter Hatches Fly Fishing Club – will assure you plenty of one-on-one coaching. |
Looking for something “fishy” in the middle of winter? Every year, Winter Hatches organizes a Fly Tying Symposium. We bring together some of the best people available to coach you in the art of fly-tying. It’s an opportunity to meet fly-tying aficionados from across Ontario and elsewhere. People come to learn, exchange ideas and swap fishing stories. |
